Calcium fluoride(Cas 7789-75-5) Usage

crystal structure

Calcium fluoride is an ionic crystal with the fluorine anions in a simple cubic array and calcium cations in half of the cubic sites of the structure. The calcium ions can also be thought of as being on an "expanded" fcc lattice with the fluorine ions causing their lattice separation to be 0.39 nm.

Production method

The fluorite deposits which have been found in china, are main used the mine using underground mining method, or shallow open-pit mining, and underground deep mining, for ore body most tilt vein, the extending is also large. Mining method is based in shallow hole Shrinkage Method based. Mining process sees "phosphate rock." Beneficiation methods have two types generally, the one is raw ore can become qualified ore concentrate by handling select, the second is hand-selected lean ore and tailings.

Physical properties

White cubic crystal or powder; refractive index 1.434; density 3.18 g/cm3; hardness 4 Mohs; melts at 1,418°C; vaporizes at 2,533°C; insoluble in water (16 mg/L at 20°C); Ksp 3.9x10-11; slightly soluble in dilute mineral acid; soluble in concentrated acids (with reaction).

Definition

A pure naturally occurring form of calcium fluoride.

General Description

Odorless gray powder or granules. Sinks in water. Calcium fluoride is the inorganic compound of the elements calcium and fluorine with the formula CaF₂. It is a white solid that is practically insoluble in water. It occurs as the mineral fluorite, which is often deeply coloured owing to impurities.

Reactivity Profile

Calcium fluoride has weak oxidizing and reducing powers, but redox reactions can still occur. Calcium fluoride can form on tooth surfaces under acidic conditions and high fluoride concentrations. This can act as a fluoride sink, protecting the mineral from acid and releasing fluoride to suppress demineralization. Calcium fluoride is inert to many acids and organic chemicals, including HF. However, it can slowly dissolve in nitric acid.

Hazard

An irritant.

Health Hazard

Little acute toxicity

Flammability and Explosibility

Nonflammable

Industrial uses

Calcium fluoride has many industrial uses, including:
Optical components: Calcium fluoride is transparent across a wide range of frequencies, from ultraviolet to infrared. It's used to make windows and lenses for telescopes, spectroscopy, thermal imaging systems, and excimer lasers.
Metallurgy: Calcium fluoride is used as a flux in the steel industry. It's also used in aluminum metallurgy.
Brake linings: Calcium fluoride is used as an additive in high-performance brake pads. It improves the comfort and stability of the brake lining, especially at high temperatures.
Welding rods: Calcium fluoride is used in the electrodes industry for welding rods.
Thermoluminescent dosimeters: Doped calcium fluoride exhibits thermoluminescence and is used in thermoluminescent dosimeters.
Dental products: Calcium fluoride is commonly used in toothpaste and mouthwash.

Safety Profile

Moderately toxic by intraperitoneal route. Mildly toxic by ingestion. An experimental teratogen. Other experimental reproductive effects. Mutation data reported. See also FLUORIDES and CALCIUM COMPOUNDS. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of F-.

Potential Exposure

Calcium fluoride is used for production of hydrofluoric acid; as a flux in steel manufacture; in smelting; electric arc welding, making glass and ceramics; and to fluoridate drinking water.

Shipping

Calcium fluoride is not specifically covered by DOT in its Performance-Oriented Packaging Standards.
